Phase 1 · IPA

Inner Purpose Activation

The room hunts for one thing that has no purpose. They cannot find it. Then they look at their own fingerprint.

All four phases Phase: 1 of 4Runs for: 20 min

The concept

Nothing that exists is without a purpose — including the person looking for the exception.

The experiment

Find anything in or around this space that has no purpose.

The declaration

“I have a purpose. I have a fingerprint no-one else has, so I can leave an imprint that no-one else can.”

Phase one of the live day, and the one that decides the room.

The facilitator asks 200 learners to find anything in or around the hall that has no purpose. Then they take answers. A stone. A weed. Dust. Litter. Something broken. Each one gets held up, examined out loud, and turned over — and each one turns out to be doing something.

The important part is what the facilitator does not do. They never assert the conclusion. If an adult stands at the front and announces that everything has a purpose, it is a claim, and a fifteen-year-old is right to be sceptical of claims. If the room spends four minutes genuinely trying to break the idea and cannot, the conclusion is theirs. They own it, and they will defend it later that day when the work gets harder.

Then the attention turns. Every learner looks at their own fingerprint — a pattern that has never existed before and will not exist again, on a hand they have had with them their whole life and never once thought about this way.

Why this is first

A hall full of teenagers arrives braced. Some are bored, some are performing for their friends, a few are waiting for the adult to say something they can dismiss. You cannot open with belief work into that. “Believe in yourself” is another adult sentence, and they have heard it.

So the day opens with something they can test. The hunt is genuinely open — learners are invited to win it — and the failure to win is the proof. By the time the fingerprint arrives, the room has already agreed to the premise, because they got there themselves.

The declaration

Every phase but one closes with a line said out loud by the whole room:

I have a purpose. I have a fingerprint no-one else has, so I can leave an imprint that no-one else can.

Two hundred voices saying the same sentence at the same time is not a small thing in a school hall. Most learners have never said anything about themselves out loud, in public, that was not a joke.

What it is not

This is not a religious session, a personality test, or a claim about where purpose comes from. It is an observation exercise about design and function, and it stops there. Learners of any faith, or none, finish it on the same footing.

It is also not therapy. FutureFit facilitators are not counsellors and do not present as any registered profession. If something surfaces for a learner, it goes to the school’s own designated person, the same day.

Questions about Inner Purpose Activation

Is this a religious or spiritual session?

No. The exercise is an observation about objects and design, not a claim about where purpose comes from. Learners from any background, or none, can complete it honestly and reach the same conclusion. We do not name a source and we do not ask them to.

What if a learner says "me — I have no purpose"?

It happens, and the facilitator is briefed for it. It is answered in the room, gently and without singling the learner out, and it is exactly why this phase runs first rather than last. Anything that suggests a learner is struggling goes to the school's designated safeguarding contact the same day, through the school's own process.

Why start here instead of with the physical work?

Because everything after this spends the credit this phase earns. A room that has personally failed to break an idea will follow you into the harder work. A room that was told the idea will not.

This is one phase of a four-phase day

The whole thing runs in about two hours for up to 200 learners, headsets included, in your own hall.
